Drawing meeting in Nuremberg

15. August 2021

In July 2021, I met with artists from Italy and a group of urban sketchers to sketch in Nuremberg. We had a great time and a lot of fun drawing together.

Distributing motifs across multiple sketchbooks is a topic I often find myself exploring. Once, I even had to use five sketchbooks for that. By the way, I don’t leave that to chance; I pre-plan how many books the motif will be distributed across. You can find more examples under the following link

Drawing weekend in Weimar

28. July 2021

I visited Weimar for a few days in July 2021 and had my sketchbook with me. A number of quick sketches were made in this beautiful city.

The SCHWABILLU contains excellent works from the fields of posters, comics, animation, infographics, children’s books and lifestyle, mainly created using the manual design techniques of ink, acrylic, watercolor or woodcut.

Candles made from our own beeswax

14. July 2020

This time it’s not about drawing – because of Corona we had time during the forced break to produce plenty of candles.
My son Alex and I have been beekeeping for 8 years now. In spring, we were busy making handmade candles from our own beeswax.

Im Frühling waren wir fleißig und haben handgezogene Kerzen aus eigenem Bienenwachs hergestellt.
The biggest effort is clearing the wax. After heating, the coarse dirt particles are first sieved out. Candle wax must be absolutely pure and free of impurities so that they burn beautifully.
Wax and added distilled water are heated together and whisked in the liquid stage using a drill with a stirring attachment. Wax and added distilled water are heated together and whisked in the liquid stage using a drill with a stirring attachment. Now slowly reduce the temperature. The pure wax is lighter than the water and floats on top. Once the wax has solidified, the wax block is tipped out of the bucket. Dirt can now be scraped off the underside. This process is repeated 2-3 times.

Making the candles is then more fun and requires less patience. Wicks are dipped into liquid wax. Depending on the diameter of the candle, a corresponding wick size is required, as the candle should burn evenly and not soot.

We will soon be trying out whether you can draw and paint with beeswax and will be happy to let you know 🙂
Now it’s time to harvest the honey. There will also be a small contribution to this.

My Ferrara sketchbooks

11. June 2020

during the Diari di Viaggio Festival 2019 in Ferrara I had to try something out again…
The blue photo images were generated from my own photos taken in Ferrara in recent years. I then used Adobe Photoshop to color the photos monochrome with a blue filter. Then printed upside down using a color laser printer (with recycling toner). Using acetone, I was able to transfer the images into the sketchbook (before binding). If you would like to find out more about this topic, you will find further information on transfer technology in our “Download Premium” section.

Festival Travelogues

4. June 2020

For the second time I was allowed to exhibit a selection of my sketchbooks at the Diari di Viaggio Festival 2019 in Ferrara. Artists from all over the world exhibit their travel sketchbooks here. It was great to meet like-minded people and draw together in this beautiful Italian city.
The entire old town center of Ferrara is a Unesco World Heritage Site. I would also like to offer a sketchbook seminar here in the future.

25 years of Zeichenwerk

14. May 2020

This year it is time and we look back with satisfaction on 25 lively years in which we were able to support many people in developing and refining their drawing techniques.
What makes me very happy is that I still really enjoy teaching the art of drawing and that new ideas keep coming up. So the flame is still burning very hot.

Although we are looking more into the future, at this moment I would like to look back into the past and show you a few pictures from back then 🙂
The same room in 1995 and 2019. It all started with the drawing work at St. Ursula 12 in Augsburg. The seminars were held here for 5 years. We still use the beautiful seminar room from time to time – what memories!

My seminars always had to be fun and relaxed, then as now. Unfortunately, I’m not as flexible as I was back then.

Soon I was also giving drawing seminars at technical colleges, like here in Nürtingen around 1998. Explaining things clearly so that everyone understands has always been my requirement. That’s how I developed the video system back then. A camera was used to transmit a signal to televisions so that the students could record. And I could even deliver flicker-free quality – quite expensive at the time.
What was unique in Germany at that time, I look at today with a smile. The televisions were quite small after all.

At the end of the 90s, projectors became interesting. The quality of screen projections was already enormous. Here you can see our second seminar room in Stadtbergen. Most of our seminars were held there between 2000 and 2005.

Most of our seminars took place there between 2000 and 2005. Naturally with the finest picture and audio quality, as the Zeichenwerk is constantly evolving. In 2008, after a lot of hard work, my book “Zeichnen in der Gartengestaltung” Ulmer-Verlag was finished and translated into Russian.

Now I have told the story of the Zeichenwerk and I would like to thank everyone who met us along the way.
We have great plans and visions for the future. We will inform you in good time.

Best regards, Daniel Nies

Generation get-together

1. May 2020

It’s so nice to see how my seminars resonate across generations. In the meantime, the adult daughters and sons of former participants keep coming back.
The Reischenböck family with three generations was able to top this.
Many thanks to Maria, Werner & Klaus Reischenböck for your trust.

Best regards, Daniel Nies
